Katherine continues to be a science nut. For her birthday we had an astronaut day. We worked together to earn her NASA patch and Space Explorer try-it for Brownies. We read books about space, watched Magic School Bus Space episodes, ate "Cosmic Quesadillas" for dinner, and even made a moon cake.
The girls helped me add the oreos to the frosting for our moon cake. Unfortunately, we all loved oreos a little TOO much (one of those forbidden treats!) and added way too much to the frosting thinking it needed more. The result, an extremely rough moon and very rich frosting. Oh well, we all "suffered" through it!
I have to say what a delight it is to have Katherine in the family. She actually asked me if I could teach her how to do the laundry so she could help - further proof that Heavenly Father does hear and answer my prayers! She is now doing all her and her sister's laundry herself. She's also been known to do a load of our laundry without even asking. It's so awesome!
Katherine has also really enjoyed watching the Olympics. She's been exploring different sports to determine what she likes best. She hasn't found one yet, but she was so inspired by all the athletes and their hard work that she's going to keep looking. I'm so glad!
She loves school, but find the repetition of math boring. She loves learning new math facts, but the daily timed drills drive her nuts. She finishes her advanced 2nd grade reading program next week and will move on to advanced 3rd grade reading. She'll finish 2nd grade math later in March and move on to 3rd grade math. She's also working on her first research paper - on horses. She's researching the different horses online and then creating an outline of the facts to get her thoughts organized, then she'll start to write. I'm teaching Research Writing right now for the University of Phoenix, so it's been fun to give Katherine similar (though simplified) versions of the same assignments my college students are doing and seeing her excel.
Katherine is a great kid. She misses her friends in NH a lot - she's very sad they can't be with her when she's baptised next month (our Stakes does all 8 year-old baptisms on one day each month so she has to wait for the March date. I don't like it, but I won't get started.), most of her cousins and aunts and uncles will be there, which will be nice, but we miss our NH family very much. We'll post pictures of the baptism when it happens.
