Michele (who has known me since 7th grade piano class - and neither one of us will admit quite how long ago that was!) lives in southern Florida - Boynton Beach - speaking of geography. She sent us a Flat Stanley to take around Alaska to help Jenna's class learn a little more about our state. We had great fun before we sending him back and thought we'd share some photos.
Here is a picture of Flat Stanley with some of the Brownies in the girls' Brownie troop. He enjoyed attending the meeting and didn't mind being the only boy there.
We also showed Stanley what an authentic Native Alaskan totem pole looked like. This is one of the more colorful ones - handmade by the people that live there. Yes, the girls are in short sleeves - it warmed up to 50 that day and it felt good to feel the sun on our skin - finally!
Finally, we took Stanley to see an actual Glacier.
This glacier is actually receding - it is the flat part of the picture that looks more like a frozen river. This glacier is a wall of ice that has crept along wiping out all trees and everything in its path. Now it is receding and leaving nutrient rich land in its wake.
In the little report we filled out, we talked about some other fun Alaska things we weren't able to photograph, like:
- North Pole, Alaska when Santa Clause has a house and you can visit the merry elf every day of the year.
- Arctic Air Command - they are they folks that track Santa's progress each Christmas Eve and you can listen to their reports on the radio or online.
- Northern Lights, but our schedule didn't work with the weather conditions, so that one didn't work either.
We had fun with Stanley and hope Jenna's class enjoys the photos!

What a clever idea and a fun way for the Florida children to learn about Alaska. It is much easier for the children to understand your state when they see Flat Standly in different picutes of Alaska.
